Colic Remedies

A baby with colic can be very challenging for a new parent, and finding a colic remedy that works will quickly become a top priority. While there are many remedy suggestions that a parent may peruse, it is important to remember that each infant is unique and that what works for one may not be the best solution for another.

Consider these colic remedies if your little one can’t stop crying:

Motion or White Noise

Some babies find motion or white noise soothing, and these can alleviate their crying from colic.

  • Walking while holding your infant or using a rocking swing can lull your little one into a more peaceful temperament. Using a bouncy baby ball such as the Bounce a Bye Baby can be a fun way to keep your infant in motion and calm with the same ball the mother can use during pregnancy.
  • White noise has also been shown to help babies with colic. There is a reason why so many mothers sang lullabies; the baby is often comforted by soothing, repetitive noises. White noise CDs are available, like the one that comes free with the purchase of three swaddling blankets. This is a great way to see if white noise is the answer for your little one!
Warmth

Many believe that imitating the conditions in the womb is a good way to alleviate the symptoms of colic. The warmth and comfort of the womb can be recreated in a variety of ways by a new mother struggling with colic.

  • Swaddling. Wrapping the baby tightly and holding them close to your body imitates the warmth of the womb and enables the child to hear your heartbeat, which can calm and soothe them. Swaddling blankets should be soft and breathable, and are longer than traditional baby blankets to make swaddling easier, like the Soothing Blanket.
  • A warm water bottle wrapped in a towel or a warm bath can also soothe your infant, as long as they are closely supervised during the process.

Change in Diet

Both breastfed infants and those fed formula can have difficulty with digesting certain elements in their diet. Making some simple changes is a good way to remedy colic.

  • For babies on a formula diet, try switching from a cow’s milk-based formula to another one, such as a soy-based option. If your child is having difficulty with the lactose in formula, this may be a very effective treatment for their colic.
  • For mothers who breastfeed, consider changing your diet to see if the colic improves. Removing one element at a time will determine if there is something in your diet that is difficult for your infant to digest, such as caffeine, broccoli, beans, or dairy.
