Doctors say that a baby may have colic if he or she cries in a pattern of
3’s – more than three hours each day, more than three times each week, for
at least three weeks in a row. For most parents, whether or not they have had
a child with colic, this sounds pretty daunting.
Worried parents of hard to settle infants often want to know “How long does
colic last?” A newborn automatically brings with him or her sleepless nights
and a dramatically changed schedule, but a newborn who shows signs of colic
can be even more challenging. Parents often feel frustrated, depressed, and
worn out when their child has colic, making the question of how long colic
will last an important question to help them handle the situation.
The good news
The frustrating thing about colic is that there is no definite, single, provable
cause of this condition, which makes it very difficult to determine exactly
how long it should last or how to get rid of it. While most infants (and their
parents) do grow out of colic by the time they are three months old, there
is no way to tell if your child is one of those children or one who will continue
to show signs until they reach six months.
The best thing you can do is remind yourself that this phase will end soon
enough and work on finding ways to soothe and comfort your child’s cries.
Suggestions for colic relief
Luckily, colic has been an issue for infants and parents for a long time,
so there are plenty of ideas for colic treatment.
Some ideas that parents frequently find successful include:
Swaddling with a soft blanket such as the Soothing blanket
Correcting feeding position to facilitate better digestion
Bouncing gently. The Bounce a Bye Baby is comfortable way to strengthen
your core muscles while comforting your infant
If you are feeling tired and maybe even a little discouraged by your infant’s
colic, you are not alone. Many parents struggle with this period of their
baby’s development, but soon enough it will pass. In the meantime, keep trying
to find the best solution for relieving your infant’s colic.
