How soon can I take a pregnancy test

How soon can I take a pregnancy test?

If you are worried you might be pregnant or trying actively to conceive, a question that you have probably been asking is how soon can I take a pregnancy test? There is no single moment when you are guaranteed to get an accurate result from a pregnancy test although the longer you wait the more likely that the result will be correct.

How soon you can expect an accurate result from either an at-home pregnancy test or one administered by your physician depends on the following factors:

  1. The sensitivity of the test. Some pregnancy tests are more sensitive than others, able to detect much lower levels of hCG. Any hCG is an indication of implantation, so more sensitive tests are just as accurate but able to detect sooner than the less sensitive tests.
  2. Rate of hCG production. Fetuses produce hCG after implantation in the uterus, but the rate of hCG varies from one fetus to another. If yours is a little slow, it can take longer to produce enough hCG to get a positive result on a pregnancy test.
  3. Urine dilution. This depends on how much you have had to drink at the time you take an at-home test. If you have had a lot of water, it will be harder for the test to detect hCG even if the fetus is producing a significant amount.
  4. Time of day. Generally, if you take a test first thing in the morning, you will get the most accurate concentration of hCG in your urine. If you wait longer, you will consume other things that can influence the test.
When you ovulated. Do you know exactly when you ovulate each month? Generally, women ovulate 14 or 15 days after the first day of their cycle. The first day of menstruation marks the beginning of your cycle, so ovulation usually occurs in the middle of your cycle. However, this varies from one woman to another, and in some cases can also vary from month to month. Unless you are carefully tracking your ovulation each month, it may be hard to know how long to wait to take a pregnancy test.

When all else fails

As there are so many factors to consider when determining how soon you can tell if you are pregnant, it is often a good idea to wait until after a missed period in order to get the most accurate answer. However, if you can’t wait that long, try to take the test early in the day, and be prepared for the possibility of a false negative result.
