Why infant bouncer seats really work

It seems like there are a never-ending list of products available that claim to help parents soothe their baby, making it hard to tell the good choices from the overpriced or simply unnecessary ones. One infant soothing product that has been around for a while is the infant bouncer. These have stayed popular for many years because they do work well, and they can be a good choice for many parents.

Infant bouncers and soothing

An infant bouncer, also called a baby bouncer, is basically a seat in a stable frame that allows the baby to use his or her own motion to bounce. Some are battery operated so that they will provide motion for the baby without any effort on the infant’s part.

Infant bouncers are thought to be soothing for the baby because they provide a motion that mimics the sensation of movement that the baby experienced inside the womb. They are also a lifesaver for parents who need a break from holding and bouncing their new infant!

What to look for in a bouncer

While a baby bouncer can be a great soothing product for your infant, it is like other products marketed to parents in that you have to be aware of what to look for to avoid purchasing something you don’t need, or worse, that is not safe for your child.

Here are some of the things to look for when purchasing an infant bouncer:

  • A proper safety restraint. It should look like the three or five point harness you see on car seats so that it will be able to effectively secure your baby into the bouncer.
  • Sturdiness. In addition to being made from quality materials, you will want to make sure that the bouncer has a wide base to prevent it from tipping over.
  • Comfort. If your baby is irritated by the material of the bouncer or otherwise uncomfortable, it will not be a very soothing experience.
  • Features. Depending on how much you want to spend, you can choose from bouncers that include adjustable speeds, sounds, music, and even mobiles or toy bars.
  • A canopy. If you live somewhere sunny and intend to take the bouncer with you outdoors, make sure that it will provide shade for the infant.
  • Weight and height limitations. Bouncers are not intended for older infants, so check to see the weight and height restrictions to ensure that you will be able to get enough use out of this product to justify purchasing it.
