Can I diet during pregnancy?

Should I be dieting while I’m pregnant?
It seems counterintuitive, but it is not uncommon for women who find out that they are pregnant to ask their doctor, “Can I diet during my pregnancy?”
Although some women view pregnancy as an opportunity to eat for two, the majority of American women are overweight and trying to lose at least some of that weight. Upon finding out that they are pregnant; weight loss becomes a more complex issue. In general, dieting during pregnancy is a bad idea.
Diet and Pregnancy
During your pregnancy, your diet is the source of not only your own nutrients but those necessary for the growth and development of your unborn child. The baby is the top priority as far as your body is concerned, which means that your body will take nutrients from you to give them to your baby if you are not consuming enough for both of you. It is important to take care of yourself and your baby during this time by eating a healthy and varied diet as well as taking any supplements recommended by your doctor.
Weight Gain
Pregnancy is a personal and unique experience. There is no correct or perfect amount of weight to gain, but there are some generally guidelines. In order to know what is healthy for you during your pregnancy, you have to consider your body mass index (BMI) before you get pregnant. If your BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9, you are in the normal or healthy range, between 25 and 29.9 is overweight, and over 30 is considered obese. For more information, check out the BMI calculators online.

Weight gain recommendations are as follows:
- Women in the normal range should gain between 25 and 35 pounds
- Women in the overweight range should aim for 15 to 25 pounds
- Obese women should aim between 11 and 20 pounds
What does this mean?
In general, to gain this amount of weight in a healthy and gradual manner, pregnant women should try to increase their caloric intake by approximately three hundred calories a day. Some women lose weight during their first trimester due to morning sickness, and this is normal. However, weight loss during the second and third trimesters is not normal and should be discussed with your doctor.
