Why do I have bad hiccups during pregnancy?
Women have many questions about what happens to their bodies during pregnancy, but one of the most perplexing questions they pose to friends and doctors alike is one that should be very simple to answer: what causes bad hiccups during early pregnancy?
There are several hypotheses regarding this topic, but the uncertainty remains because there is still a great deal of uncertainty regarding what causes hiccups in anyone in the first place. However, the question does create the opportunity to discuss an issue that may arise later in pregnancy, that of fetal hiccups.
Hiccups during early pregnancy
Hiccups in all humans can be caused by any number of factors such as changes in diet, eating too fast, unique breathing conditions, anxiety, even fear. During early pregnancy, you may experience bad hiccups for any of these reasons. However, it is also likely that you may experience this symptom because of changes in the way you breathe while you are pregnant.
Pregnancy puts great demands on the body, both for nutritional resources and energy needs. One way the body responds to these demands is by breathing more deeply, inhaling between 30 and 40% more air with each breath.
While the additional oxygen helps your body work harder, the additional air may be difficult for your body in other ways, resulting in hiccups. The hiccups can be annoying and irritating, but they do not indicate any larger problem and should go away on their own. |

Fetal hiccups
An issue that will likely not arise until later in your pregnancy is the experience of fetal hiccups. Many mothers, especially those who are pregnant for the first time, are a little surprised and maybe a little nervous when they experience fetal hiccups for the first time. The sensation is similar to feeling the baby kick, but it is more constant and in the same spot. These “hiccups” are not exactly like the ones that adults experience, but they are part of the normal and healthy development of your baby.
Here are some things to keep in mind if you experience fetal hiccups?
- Fetal hiccups are a sign that the baby is practicing breathing, allowing him or her to be ready to breathe once they are out of the womb
- They generally occur more frequently as the pregnancy progresses
- This is not painful or annoying for the infant in the way that hiccups might bother adults
If you experience bad hiccups during early pregnancy, it is probably a bit irritating but should not cause you any concern. As you progress through the second trimester, you may experience fetal hiccups, which are also normal and should not worry you. |
