Packing for the hospital when you’re pregnant and about to deliver your baby!
One of the things that every pregnancy book reminds mothers to think about during the third trimester is what to bring or pack to go to the hospital. The lists can be very long and complex or short and simple, but how do you know what you will really want when you are in the midst of a unique and highly personal experience?
And while we’d love to make sure you have a swaddling blanket or nursing pillow ready for your newborn, the best answer is to ask yourself what makes you feel comfortable and calm, and then to trust your answers. Here are some suggestions about what you may want to have in your pregnancy hospital bag:
The necessities
Some things are essential for moms-to-be at the hospital. These are things that will add to your comfort both during labor and after delivery. Items that fit into this category include:
- Toothbrush and toothpaste for you and your significant other
- Something comfortable to hold your hair back such as a ponytail holder or headband
- Toiletries: deodorant, face wash, any other products you consider essential
- Lip balm and lotion, as hospitals are generally very dry places
- Maternity/nursing bras with nursing pads, even if you do not intend to nurse. The pads will help you with any leakages you might experience and the bras will be much more comfortable than your normal bra.
- Cell phone, camera, and chargers for both. You will want to have the numbers and be able to call the people you love to tell them the exciting news, and even if you don’t feel photo-ready, your baby will be!
- A going-home outfit and receiving blanket for the baby
- Maternity underwear for yourself
- A bathrobe or sweater if you get chilly

Optional items
Other items are not absolutely necessary, but they can add to your comfort and make the birthing experience a little more pleasant. These items are the ones that you should choose based on your own preferences – if you love music, that’s a great choice, but if you never use your iPod, don’t bother packing it.
Other items women choose to bring include:
- Pictures of their other children or loved ones
- Music
- Snacks and/or change for the vending machine
- A pillow and/or blankets from home
It’s your decision what to bring to the hospital, and if you are nervous about it, it never hurts to have a few too many things. Leave excessive amounts of cash, valuables, and jewelry at home, though, because you don’t want to worry about them being lost or stolen. |
